Dancing Your Way to the Top
In my search for wholesome entertainment that my family and I could enjoy, I came across an old movie called “Little Colonel” starring Shirley Temple and Bill Robinson a.k.a. “Mr. Bojangles.” In one adorable scene, Shirley doesn’t want to go to bed and Mr. Bo Jangles convinces her to go to bed if she’ll allow him to teach her a new way to go up the stairs. In this extraordinary performance, both tap dance there way up and down the stairs like angels.
I couldn’t help but appreciate this scene, imagining myself as a little girl standing next to God at the foot of the stairs, taking His hand and allowing Him to lead me upward. Can I really trust Him with my life? We all want to ascend into spiritual maturity, but do we trust Him enough to allow Him to take the lead?
I Want to do That too!
I would like to read something from a book that has inspired me in my spiritual journey, “The Dance of the Shulamite” by Barbara Urban.
She writes, “The dance of unbridled passion for the Son of God, expressed in extravagant acts of unwavering obedience.” The dance is not necessarily a “dance” but you moving toward your goal or flow in life.
We all have a dance in us.
That dance is an expression of the creator within us, moving in the flow of unity with others. Its time for you to make your move.
Unfortunately, many dance to the world’s way that captivates them with the bling and shiny promises of pleasure and happiness. Others are enslaved to the primal dance of carnality – just simply want what everyone else has, an immediate satisfaction without any work or effort.
Some become ensnared by the dance of religion, chained to legalistic maneuvers which keep them far from ever finding their own passion and dance. They place their hope on the invisible (and sometimes fantastical) God. They still want someone else to do the work for them. They don’t want to put in the practice and effort to make it happen.
What is your dance?
Are you ready to break out of the confines of your situation and live a life of the “kingdom here and now”? Another word, you don’t have to wait for something to happen…you can have it now! You can dance with passion, love, and tenacity. It doesn’t matter if you appear as if to others as having two left feet. Just move!
That is the dance you’re to dance. Don’t be afraid of who is watching. Let go and dance.
